The Year in Travel 2024: Ha Giang, Capella, and Linda's 30th
2024 in travel: 32 days total, two major trips (Hong Kong/Vietnam at £6,400 for two, Crete at £900 each), smaller European weekends (Edinburgh, Tuscany, Stockholm, Dublin). Ma Pi Leng Pass at 7am on a motorbike with mist in the valley was the single best moment. Capella Hanoi proved the four-night minimum rule for luxury hotels. The Crete villa proved group villas are the best value in travel. Total household spend: £10,700. Three lessons: four-night splurge minimums, motorcycle riding compounds year on year, and planning is love.

Packing for 30 days in Asia: one checked bag each (23kg), cabin bag survives 24 hours independently. Alexander: 8 t-shirts, 2 linen shirts, 3 shorts, trail runners, flip flops, motorcycle helmet, Comandante grinder. Linda: 14 underwear, 4 dresses, fleece for volcano sunrises, 4 pairs of shoes, the Make-Up Cube, a silk pillowcase. Shared: medication kit (Imodium, Buscopan, electrolytes, thermometer), power strip with 5 outlets, duct tape. Laundry every 5 days in Asia costs £3/kilo.
